It is Simon Snow’s last year at Watford School of Magicks, where he has been groomed as the Chosen One by the Mage, the head of school and also the new leader of the magical world. For example, the spells are actually song lyrics and proverbs. The novel’s tone is playful and often referential and metafictional.

But Rowell is no less concerned with the minutiae of world-building than with the relationships of her characters, exploring these teenagers’ romances, friendships, and their connections with mentors. Carry On traces the adventures of a teenage magician widely believed to be the prophesied “Chosen One” whose powers will rid an alternate world Kingdom of a coming evil menace. In 2015, Rowell expanded on this novel-within-a-novel by writing Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow, fleshing out the world and characters of her own affectionate tribute to Harry Potter. My editor, Sara Goodman, and I have been hoping for a matching edition ever since. In Rainbow Rowell’s novel Fangirl, the title character, a college student named Cath, is deeply invested in a fictional series of novels about a boy wizard named Simon Snow. But we also knew how frustrating that would be for matching-book purists! When I decided to keep Simon and Baz’s story going with Wayward Son and Any Way the Wind Blows, everyone on the team knew we wanted Kevin to illustrate the covers. In Kevin’s hands and with Olga still designing, Simon and Baz looked like they were going to charge right off the page.įor the first time, Carry On looked like itself. What I love about Kevin’s style, aside from how gorgeous it is, is that it feels vital and electric. We sought out one of my favorite illustrators, Kevin Wada, and asked him to help us do something completely different from the hardcover. Was this some sort of elaborate prank? Had I written Fangirl fanfiction ? We wanted the paperback cover to better communicate what the book was - an actual fantasy novel, a passionate romance, and very much its own story. And lots of people still weren’t sure what to make of it. It reminds me of a French New Wave movie poster.īut after Carry On came out, we realized that people didn’t get that the book was a fantasy. Olga Grlic at Wednesday Books designed that cover - and even illustrated it herself. When Carry On first came out in hardcover, we wanted the cover to be very modern and bold, to signal that this wasn’t a straightforward Chosen One story.
